Broadband Internet has revolutionised the Internet. Broadband is an 'always on' connection to the Internet. Broadband means we can access information on the web quicker than ever before. For many businesses broadband has become essential.

Broadband has made the old fashioned slow dial-up connection a thing of the past. Internet dial-up connections used the same line as the telephone and standard modems could only connect and access data at 56 kb per second. You had to wait for the slow modem to dial up to get online.

Once online you could not use the phone and modem simultaneously because they used the same telephone line. Accessing information was a slow process. The cost of using dial-up was often prohibitive as there was normally a charge by the minute. Some ISPs did offer free connection as part of their package.

Broadband uses a second line for its connection which keeps the phone line clear for calls. Installing broadband requires an engineer visit to install the second line and modem. Some ISPs offer free broadband installation as part of their deal. Check with your ISP that broadband is available in your area first.
