Computer printers have changed dramatically in the last ten years. Back then the only real printer available was the daisy-wheel impact type that gave inconsistent quality results that were no better than those found on an old fashioned typewriter. The noise from the daisy-wheel mechanism was notoriously loud and they cost hundreds of pounds to buy.

The quality found on today's new wave of printers is unrecognisable from those old days. Now we have inject printers, laser printers, photo printers, thermal printers etc. Today, printers are quick, efficient, almost silent and very cheap. All of this makes them the perfect home and small office printers.

As with any purchase, make sure you do thorough research before you buy. Make sure you buy a printer that will be able to do what you want it to for the budget you are willing to pay. Are you looking to buy a printer that will allow you to print out photographs? Buy a good quality photo printer then. Are you looking to print out plain black and white word-processed articles. Then a basic ink jet printer will do.

A vital point to consider before buying is exactly how much will the printer cartridges cost to replace once empty. Printers can be purchased from around £20 upwards. The cartridges on some of these cost £17 each time to replace. Printer manufacturers often sell their printers at a loss and make their money from the cartridges. Watch out for this.
