In today's modern trendy gyms with running machines, cardio machines and step machines dumbbells look decades out of fashion, especially beside the various weight machines specifically designed for certain muscle groups.

But never overlook dumbbells because they are still vital to any gym or home workout. Used correctly they give an excellent work out to many different muscle groups in the arms, legs and shoulders. The smallest dumbbell sets can be used whilst on a running machine. The heavier dumbbell weights can be lifted by themselves.

Many high street catalogue stores stock them and it is now possible to buy a cheap dumbbell set for a few pounds. Some dumbbell ranges come as sand surrounded by a plastic casing. Other sets come as steel surrounded by foam.

Dumbbells are normally not adjustable, which means there is no flexibility in the weight being lifted. Prices start around £7 for the 2LBS set of two. As a general rule, as the weight goes up so too does the price. A 5LBS dumbbell sets costs around £10. Full dumbbell sets can also be purchased that have a range of weights from the lightest to the heaviest.

Adjustable dumbbells are the next line up. These allow for weight adjustments. Extra weights can be added to the dumbbells. Extra weights can also be bought separately and clipped onto the bar.
