Rowing machines are not just designed for rowers. They are
an excellent source of cardio exercise and should be used
as a vital part of any varied gym or home exercise routine.
They give an intensive, low impact cardio workout and work
especially well on the back, torso, legs and arms.
Cheap rowing machines can now be bought for home use for less than £100. These entry level models often come with gym style rowing action and air resistance systems. They also come with a comfortable seat and oversize footrests. Most cheap models work through the creation of air resistance, which is the resistance you row against.

| Expect to pay well over £900 for a top of the range model with loads of added features and options. They normally come with dozens of pre-programmed programs which allow the user to personalise the machine for their own use. If they want to have an intense workout on harsh water conditions, they can choose that program. If they want a light workout, they can select that program option. Top of the range models normally replicate not only the superb physical benefits of rowing but much of the aesthetic pleasure as well. Like rowing, the connection is fluid, there is no impact, jerkiness and jarring typical of lesser rowing machines.

Many top of the range models work by creating water resistance inside the machine that the user rows against. The workout is generated by overcoming the effect of drag as the water moves past the tank. When rowing, the faster you move the boat the greater the drag and the greater the intensity of exercise required to maintain your speed. The limit to the speed you can maintain is you, your physiology. Not the machine.Read the instruction manual fully to ensure you set up and use any rowing machine correctly. Remember to adjust the foot settings and seat before use. Spray with an anti-bacterial cleaning fluid and wipe down after use to maintain hygiene. This is especially important in the gym where dozens of people could use the machine after you. Accessories can be bought for all home based rowing machines. If your machine does not have a heart rate monitor or pulse rate monitor, you can buy these as extras. Always do your research before buying a machine. Check online reviews and user ratings.
